I learnt that it’s a privilege to be in good and sound health. I equally learnt it’s a privilege to be in the position of a helper and to understand several languages. I learnt all these insights in the course of helping others. Last Thursday 22nd November, I transported a Syrian family to CHUS Sainte-Justinein Montreal.
They had an appointment in that hospital because their youngest son had difficulties walking due to some pains in the left leg. So, I accepted SERY’s commission to transport them back and forth. To cut the long story short, I had to call to the hospital by myself and speak to the lady on the line by myself on behalf of the family because neither of the patient’s parents could speak French or English. The worst part of it that they didn’t even know the doctor they were going to see, neither did they know the department in which they were supposed to be received. I’m sure they must have been given all this information, but they surely forgot since it’s in a language they understand very little or not at all. If these details were given in Arabic language, then surely things would have been better. Hopefully their son of between 10 and 12 years old played a good role as an interpreter and guider. This experience reminded me how privileged I am to be able to be able to switch from English to French in a fluent manner. They stayed in the hospital for more than seven hours and I’m sure they didn’t eat consistent food, neither could work that day. Another reminder of what grace I have, to enjoy good health. This learning matters because when you start being conscious of how privileged you are to have what you have, you stop complaining. You stop taking things for granted and you start leaving a life of contentment. Because of this experience, I will be able to give good education to my children and younger ones. Thanks to such experiences, I live my life with an attitude of gratitude instead of grooming (sulking) and complaint. I shall keep pushing forward with my studies in order to be in better positions to help, with more responsibilities. By so doing, I shall be able to employ people who will help me better my quality of servic
e towards people in my community and all over the world. It is obvious that this project reinforced my career beliefs because of the wisdom and experience I gain all through the process. It encourages me to continue pursuing my career path so as to always be in the helper’s position. Why? There is more privilege in giving than in receiving.
